NEW YORK, Sept 25 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha gave a speech in SDG Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, saying the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was ready to work with the United Nations to contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In his capacity as the ASEAN chair, he delivered the speech at the SDGs Summit, which is the first gathering at the Summit level after leaders from countries, including Thailand, have adopted in 2015 the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 with the objective to assess and expedite the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2020.
He said during the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok in June, the regional group’s leaders officially adopted the ASEAN Leaders’ Vision Statement on Partnership for Sustainability as a concrete step to steer sustainable development cooperation in ASEAN.
The ASEAN summit enhanced inclusive sustainable development cooperation, particularly by promoting complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to generate concrete benefits for the people of the region.
He reiterated that ASEAN was ready to cooperate with the UN and other nations to develop knowledge, potential, and exchanges of good practices. The establishment of ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue: ACSDSD in Thailand at the end of this year will increase the capacity to propel the target of sustainable development concretely in and outside the region.
After the SDGs Summit, he attended the reception hosted by US president Donald Trump at 7 pm. local time. (TNA)
