BANGKOK, Sept 20 (TNA) – Police stop seizing driving licenses of traffic violators, starting from today as authorities begin implementation of new measure to digitise their legal action.
It is believed that the new regulation will reduce conflicts between traffic police and violators, related to driving licence seizures.
Under the new land Traffic Act, the deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau said a hard copy of a driving licence will no longer be required.
Motorists are allowed to display electronic version of their driving licences through a smartphone application “DLT QR Licence”, developed by the Land Transport Department.
They can also show photos of new driving licence cards, attached with quick response (QR) codes, so the police can check the electronic database to verify their driving license authenticity.
The police issued 13 million traffic tickets each year, only 20 per cent or 2.6 million tickets were settled by wrongdoers to receive their license back.
In the next move, set to start on Oct 1, the ticket fine database will be linked with the Land Transport Department, so offenders have to pay fines when they renew their annual car licences or have their car licenses suspended until they pay off their fines within the 30-day deadline. (TNA)
