BANGKOK, Sept 5 (TNA) – ASEAN countries have agreed to
increase the use of renewable energy by 23 percent within 2025, Thai Energy
Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong said at the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy
Meeting (AMEM) on Thursday.
ASEAN ministers and their counterparts from dialogue partner
countries as well as representatives from international organizations attended
the 37th AMEM in Bangkok to exchange views on regional energy cooperation and
strengthening the international collaboration.
The AMEM set a new target of renewable energy use increasing
from 14 percent to 23 percent, Mr Sontirat said with the view that clean and
renewable energy was the key energy source in the near future.
Another notable outcome was the expansion of power trading
project involving Laos, Thailand and Malaysia from 100 to 300 megawatts to
enhance energy connectivity in Southeast Asia, he said.
In the discussion, ASEAN ministers reviewed progress of
ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) to achieve regional
integration and connectivity, the minister added.
Mr Sontirat said ASEAN ministers also discussed about
challenges and obstacles for the block in achieving sustainable energy at the
gathering on the theme “Advancing Energy Transition through Partnership
