BANGKOK, Sept 3 (TNA) – Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sri-on ordered the Irrigation Department to protect Sukhothai’s provincial seat from flooding as the overflowing Yom River has posed a flood threat to the province’s inner areas.
The rising water levels in the Yom River and the connected small canals are flowing downstream from Phrae province to Sukhothai province.
Local irrigation office informed Sukhothai governor and agencies concerned to prepare for the overflowing water.
Irrigation officials will take several measures to reduce flood risks. It will be diverted to the Thung Bangrakham water retention area in Phisanulok to keep the water inflow, passing Sukhothai’s provincial seat less than 550 cubic metres per second.
The Bangrakham field can receive about 550 million cubic metres of water. Water pumps and other machinery have been on standby for possible flooding in residential and business areas in Sukhothai. Local residents have been warned to brace for flooding.
The authorities have accelerated draining water from connecting canals and water retention areas to receive more water and removing obstruction from waterways before the floodwater from Phrae arrives in Sukhothai’s Si Satchanalai district around 2 am. tomorrow. (TNA)
