BANGKOK, Feb 4 — The Thai Cabinet has approved a proposal that Thailand host World Tourism Day 2016, believing it would help stimulate tourism in the country and improve Thailand's image.
Government spokesman Dr Yongyuth Mayalarp said the Cabinet, meeting Tuesday, approved the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' proposal that Thailand host World Tourism Day 2016, as the event would provide a platform for the country to show its tourism and service potentials, as well as Thailand's ability to provide safe and enjoyable tourism for international visitors.
The Cabinet foresees the event as a way to also help improve Thailand's image.
The Tourism and Sports Ministry has suggested that Thailand express its willingness to host the World Tourism Day festival here in the country, as Thailand possesses numerous tourist destinations, along with culture and traditions worth studying and understanding. Thailand could encourage cultural tourism to spread the beauty and good images of the nation in order to attract quality tourists.
The government spokesman said whether or not Thailand would host World Tourism Day 2016 depends on the decision of the UN World Tourism Organization Regional Committee for East Asia and the Pacific, which will convene in June.
Thailand has belonged to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since 1975, and was nominated as president of the UN World Tourism Organization Regional Committee for East Asia and the Pacific in 2007-2009, and again in 2010-2011, but Thailand has never before offered to host such a world class event.
