RABAT, Aug 5 (TNA) – U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his country’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region, according to a statement from the Moroccan embassy in Thailand.
The announcement came in a letter from Trump to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of the country’s Throne Day on July 30. The letter, described as a “very significant development” by the embassy, also expressed full U.S. support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the region.
The embassy statement highlighted that the U.S. considers the autonomy plan to be “the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.”
The U.S. had previously expressed a similar position in December 2020. The embassy stated that this renewed stance could encourage other countries to also support the autonomy plan, which King Mohammed VI has described as a “consensual solution with no winner nor looser.”

Following the initial U.S. endorsement, several countries, including former colonial powers Spain and France, as well as the United Kingdom, Portugal, and many nations across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Arab world, and Latin America, have voiced their support for the plan.
The embassy’s statement also noted that Trump’s message underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Morocco. This partnership, it said, is key to promoting peace and stability, and in combating terrorism.
Economically, the embassy added that U.S. investment projects in the region are expected to pave the way for American and other international investors to capitalize on development opportunities in Morocco’s southern provinces. -819 (TNA)
