RABAT, June 4 (TNA) – The United Kingdom has officially endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most credible solution to the Sahara dispute.
This significant announcement came in a joint statement on June 1, 2025, after a meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
The UK, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, views this plan as the “most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a lasting settlement,” pledging to act accordingly on all diplomatic levels. Both nations also committed to supporting the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in finding a compromise.
Beyond political support, the UK will invest £5 billion in new economic projects in Morocco, including the Sahara region, through UK Export Finance. This move reinforces the UK’s view of Morocco as a vital gateway for Africa’s socioeconomic development. The UK is now the third permanent UN Security Council member, after the USA and France, to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. -819 (TNA)
