BANGKOK, May 15 – A prominent Thai Buddhist abbot, Phra Dhammavachiranuwat of Wat Rai Khing in Nakhon Pathom, is facing arrest after a court issued a warrant for his alleged embezzlement of over 300 million baht in temple funds.
The funds were reportedly used for online baccarat gambling.
The abbot also holds the high-ranking position of ecclesiastical governor of Region 14. He presented himself to the Anti-Corruption Division police earlier today to address the accusations.
His legal counsel stated they were unaware of any gambling issues and emphasized cooperation with authorities to establish his innocence. The abbot reportedly appeared calm despite the serious allegations.
The investigation into the large-scale financial irregularities is ongoing. -819 (TNA)
