BANGKOK, March 6 (TNA) – The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will investigate allegations of collusion in the Senate election as a special case, citing potential money laundering.
The decision, reached by an 11-4 vote with 3 abstentions, came after a two-hour meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
The Special Case Committee voted to accept the case after public complaints were filed. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai emphasized the decision was based on legal grounds and does not interfere with the Election Commission’s (EC) mandate, as the two bodies operate independently.
The investigation stems from claims that assets were used to influence the Senate selection process. The committee determined these actions could constitute money laundering, a special case under Thai law.
Phumtham clarified that the DSI’s involvement does not imply guilt, and due process will be followed.
The investigation will examine allegations of organized collusion and potential money laundering, with any related criminal activities also subject to inquiry. -819 (TNA)
