SAMUT PRAKAN, July 20 (TNA) – Officials of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and the Department of Livestock Development found four elephants were poorly kept at Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo.
The officials saw four unusually skinny elephants and their dirty living quarters there, showing that the places were not regularly cleaned up.
The zoo management was considered as violating the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act for failing to guarantee the proper welfare of the animals. The zoo management is liable to a fine of up to 40,000 baht. It was not held responsible for animal torture.
The officials told the zoo management to feed the elephants with fresh grass in the amount that suit their weights and also give them dietary supplements. Zoo staff were advised not to chain the pachyderms too long to reduce their injury and tension.
The officials will find out later if the zoo management will improve its care for animals as advised. (TNA)
