BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) – The prime minister discussed with the United Nations deputy secretary-general cooperation on sustainable development and marine waste management.
Achim Steiner, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), called on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha during his visit to attend a meeting with regional UNDP chiefs.
In their meeting, Gen Prayut and Mr Steiner agreed that plastic pollution and marine waste were major environmental problems and sustainable solutions to plastic pollution needed cooperation from all parties and countries. As waste management capabilities of different countries vary, they must share relevant technologies and innovations.
Gen Prayut said the government, the private sector and the civil sector were joining forces to reduce plastic use and support sustainable production and consumption. The government intended to have 100% of plastic waste recycled within 2027.
On the same occasion, the prime minister expressed gratitude towards the UNDP for supporting waste treatment projects in communities. He said the support created economic value from waste in accordance with the circular economy policy of the government. (TNA)
