KANCHANABURI Jan 13 (TNA) – The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and police are hunting for five hunters who killed two tigers in the Thong Pha Phum National Park.
Nipon Jomongsirisak, director of the Protected Area Regional Office 3 (Ban Pong) under the department, said forensic officials would today examine tiger carcasses, guns and other objects that officials of the department seized from the hunting scene in the national park to find DNA evidence in a bid to identify wrongdoers.
Earlier rangers of the Thong Pha Phum National Park spotted smoke in the Huay Pilok forest about 3-4 kilometers from the Thai-Myanmar border. They later found five suspected hunters. When the rangers were about to catch them, a dog barked and the five narrowly fled the arrest.
At the scene, officials found a makeshift barbecue frame and the carcasses of two tigers believed to be preying in Thai-Myanmar border areas. They also seized four guns and many other objects possibly used in the hunting.
Officials assumed one of the dead tigers was a male weighing 80 kilograms, the other was a female weighing 50kg and they were hunted for sale. (TNA)
