BANGKOK, Nov 22 (TNA) – The Royal Gazette announced the constitutional amendment which restores the two-ballot election system, one for the election of 400 constituency representatives and the other for 100 party-list representatives.
The Royal Gazette made the announcement on Nov 21 and the change took effect on Nov 22.
According to the announcement, Sections 83 and 91 under the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand stipulated that the House had 500 representatives consisting of 350 constituency MPs and 150 list MPs. However, the numbers of representatives did not respond to the amounts of people in their respective constituencies.
If there are 400 constituency MPs, they can take better care of people.
Besides, there must be a clear and fair method to calculate the numbers of list MPs of political parties and the one person, one vote rule should be respected. A two-ballot election system for people to vote for their favorite political parties and constituency candidates allows people to better exercise their voting rights.
The aforementioned were the reasons behind the constitutional amendment. (TNA)
