BANGKOK, Nov 11 (TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Culture has chosen Moo Deng, a three-month-old pygmy hippopotamus that became an internet sensation, as the official presenter for the upcoming Loy Krathong festival.
Loy Krathong is a beautiful Thai festival celebrated on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. People gather by rivers and lakes to release floating baskets adorned with candles, incense, and flowers as a way to pay respect to the goddess of water.
Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakitkosol announced the “Thai Cultural Content for Soft Power” initiative on Thursday, presenting Moo Deng with a “Thai Cuteness” certificate as the country’s cultural ambassador.
The initiative aims to leverage the pygmy hippo’s global appeal to promote Thai traditions, starting with the Loy Krathong festival. Over 100 public and private organizations have already requested Moo Deng’s participation in various events.
“We’re offering Moo Deng’s services without charge,” said Attaporn Sriharan, director of the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand. “The caretakers have successfully showcased rare behaviors of pygmy hippos, making Moo Deng an international star.”
Benz, Moo Deng’s caretaker, reported that the young hippo currently spends most of its time resting, with only 30-minute activity periods. “While some say a baby hippo’s peak cuteness lasts six months, each stage of their life has its own charm,” Benz added. -819 (TNA)
