BANGKOK, Aug 8 (TNA) – Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Thursday that the main opposition Move Forward Party (MFP) would respect the Constitutional Court’s ruling to dissolve the party, describing its activities as a symbolic display of its political stance.
“I don’t think it’s the intention of the MFP to cause chaos, but rather to show its stance and I understand it as a declaration to continue their political work,” he said.
He had discussed the situation with security officials and did not expect any call for major rallies. The party’s gathering the previous day had been peaceful, he added.
The Constitutional Court on Wednesday ruled to dissolve the MFP, saying the party posed a threat to the constitutional monarchy and national security by continuously and seriously campaigning for the amendment of the royal defamation law and banned its executives from politics for 10 years.
The Former MPs of the Move Forward Party are set to unveil a new party on Friday and begin nationwide membership recruitment on Aug. 10, according to Parit Wacharasindhu, the party’s former spokesperson.
Regarding the U.S. State Department’s response to the Thai court’s decision to dissolve the MFP, Prime Minister Srettha stated, “We are an independent country with our own methods for developing our political system and democracy, following the appropriate procedures.” He added that the Foreign Ministry would address the U.S. concerns in a press briefing later today. -819 (TNA)
