BANGKOK, Dec 2 (TNA) – The Constitution Court is due to rule Wednesday afternoon on the legality of the prime minister’s continued occupancy of an army residence after retiring.
Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha has remained in military housing at the 1st Infantry Regiment, King’s Guard on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road after having retired from the military in 2014.
Opposition MPs filed a petition to the court that it constituted a conflict of interest. If the court rules against him, he could be forced to step down.
Gen Prayut said on Monday that that it was up to the court and he would respect the outcome.
The army has argued that the military house where Prayut lives is not a welfare house but it is a VIP guest house. It also cited security reasons for Prayut to live inside the military compound.
The court will start reading the ruling at 3 pm. today.
Anti-government protesters earlier planned to gather outside the Constitution Court, waiting for the ruling. However, they later changed the venue and announced to gather at Lat Phrao intersection instead. (TNA)
