BANGKOK, Aug 23 (TNA) – A team of veterinarians plans to stuff the corpse of the orphaned dugong, Yamil for studies and as a symbol to raise awareness on marine conservation.
The three- month-old Yamil died of shock on Thursday night following an operation to remove sea grass, blocking its digestive system.
Yamil will be stuffed the same as the other eight-month baby dugong, Marium, which died earlier with plastics found in its stomach
The director of the Natural History Museum said the plan to stuff Marium is being discussed to select the most suitable method to make it look like the real dugong with real skin.
However, its skull and skeletons will be removed to create a model for study. The stuffing process will take at least three months, he said.
Yamil and Marium were orphaned dugongs, found washed ashore in southern Thailand. They were rescued and taken under care by veterinarians, who earlier planned to release them to their natural habitat when they were ready. (TNA)
