AZERBAIJAN, July 8 (TNA) — The 43rd Session of the World Heritage Committee did not list Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex as a World Heritage site but required the country present additional information next year.
The committee gave Thailand three years to conclude Thai-Myanmar demarcation concerning the forest complex, review the conditions and biodiversity of the complex based on its reduced area, and solve concerns about local communities in the forest complex.
The complex stands in Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. It covered 2,938,909 rai in the Kaeng Krachan National Park, the Kui Buri National Park, the Chaloem Phrakiat Thai Prachan National Park and the Maenam Phachi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Thailand has pushed for the World Heritage status of the forest complex since 2010. It is the only Southeast Asian nation that does not have a World Heritage listing this year. This year’s listing went to the Plain of Jars in Laos, the Ombilin coal mine of Indonesia and Bagan ancient city of Myanmar.
Thailand’s ancient temple complex of Prasat Phanom Rung, Prasat Muang Tam and Prasat Plai Bat in Buri Ram province and the Srithep ancient city in Phetchabun province were included in the World Heritage Committee’s Tentative List this year. (TNA)
