BANGKOK, March 15 (TNA) –The International Labour Organization (ILO) praised Thailand for being a good example for Southeast Asian nations by ratifying the ILO Convention No 188 (C188) on acceptable working conditions for fishers, Labour Minister Adul Sangsingkeo said.
The minister shared the recognition from ILO in his meeting with relevant officials on compliance with the ILO’s Work in Fishing Convention at the Labour Ministry. He said that ILO director-general Guy Ryder admired the Thai government for setting a precedent on fishing labor standard in Southeast Asia and doing hard work to comply with the convention number 188. Thailand ratified C188 in Geneva on Jan 30 and is the first country in Asia and the Pacific to do so.
Mr Adul said Mr Ryder, the ILO director-general, was aware of Thailand’s intention and great efforts to promote valuable work in the fishing sector.
With the ratification, the international community would recognize Thailand for having good measures to solve and prevent forced labor and human trafficking. C188 would promote the good image of the Thai fishing sector and support trade, exports, employment and fairness for all parties, the minister said. (TNA)
