BANGKOK, Feb 18 (TNA) – The director-general of the Corrections Department said Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang was sick but his conditions were not critical. He was being treated at Correctional Hospital.
Narat Svetanan quoted doctors at the hospital as reporting that Maj-Gen Chamlong, 83, was closely monitored by doctors and his life was not threatened. He responded to the report that Maj-Gen Chamlong fell seriously ill after being brought to the Bangkok Remand Prison on Feb 13.
Doctors did not elaborate on his illness. They only reported that there was nothing to be concerned about and all patients there always received the best care, Mr Narat said.
Maj-Gen Chamlong was among the former leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, who were imprisoned at the Bangkok Remand Prison. Others PAD leaders jailed there were Pibhob Dhongchai, 72, Somkiat Pongpaibul, 68, Somsak Kosaisuk, 72, and Suriyasai Katasila, 45. Doctors found that all of them had chronic diseases.
Maj-Gen Chamlong suffered chronic pain in his right shoulder and underwent triple vessel coronary angioplasty. Somsak underwent pterygium surgery. Pibhob suffered diabetes, hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia and high cholesterol. Suriyasai had hypertension and numbness on the right side of his body. Somkiat had hypertension and underwent surgery to treat ischemic stroke. All the inmates already had their medications and doctors provided them with close care. (TNA)
