BANGKOK, Feb 5 (TNA) – Thai political parties on Tuesday
continued to register their candidates for the March 24 general election for
the second day.
Candidates for both constituency and party-list filed their
applications at Election Commission (EC) offices or registration centers
nationwide. The EEC will accept registrations until Friday.
For those who completed the application process, it is time
to put political campaign in full swing, bringing the political rally
atmosphere that had disappeared since the 2014 coup.
Many candidates on convoys of campaigners have made
door-to-door canvassing to introduce themselves and their parties’ policies.
In Songkhla, there has been confusion over Democrat Party
candidacy after party executives announced that the former constituency MP
Wirat Kalayasiri would not run due to health issue.
But Wirat, the veteran politician and member of the
Democrat’s legal team, later denied that he was healthy and warned those who
misled the public.
The southern province is a stronghold of the Democrat
Party. However, the party has seen many
defects with the emergences of new political parties including pro-junta Palang
Pracharath Party.
The country’s oldest political party has nominated its
leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva, as the only candidate for prime minister even though
the Constitution allows each party to submit up to three names.
Some others have not submitted their list but expected to do
so by Friday. (TNA)
