KRABI, Oct 16 (TNA) – Hundreds of local residents on Monday
cleaned up Phi Phi Islands, one of the most popular beach destinations in Thai
South, as part of a campaign to promote environmental protection at the
beginning of the high season.
The annual Rak (Love) Phi Phi Day was hosted by Krabi
provincial governor Kitibodhi Prawit who presided over an auspicious ceremony
of tying the pieces of clothing around the bows of long tail boats, marking the
beginning of the campaign.
Tour operators took over 530 long tail boats, traditional
wood built boats commonly seen on beaches in southern Thailand, in the ceremony
for blessing.
The iconic long tail boats are unique transportation for
island hopping as well as cargo and fishing.
Over 700 residents, tourism workers and business owners
joined force in cleaning the beaches, piers and walkways.
Phi Phi Tambon (Sub-district) Administration Organization
president Phankham Kittithorakul said the annual Rak Phi Phi Day was aimed at
raising people’s awareness on sustainable development and environmental
conservation.(TNA)
