BURIRAM, May 28 (TNA) – Forest rangers are trying to keep
a large herd of wild elephants inside a forest in Buriram province from
ravaging local plantations.
Rangers at Dongyai Wildlife Sanctuary have patrolled the
area to prevent elephants from encroaching villages and farmland. The big herd of about 32 elephants with young
calves has been seen feeding on farm produce.
From a 2015 survey, there are about 120 wild elephants
inhabiting in the Sanctuary. The
sighting of the elephant herd near farmland has raised fear of conflicts
between the wild animals and humans.
Somsuan Raksat, head of the Sanctuary, said a
165-kilometer-long barrier system was being built to keep wild elephants away
from communities. (TNA)
