BANGKOK, Feb (15) – The Thai Raksa Chart Party (TRC) has
announced to suspend its activities for seven days to prepare its defense
against a request for its dissolution.
TRC secretary-general Mitti Tiyapairat told a press
conference that the Constitutional Court ordered TRC to send its written
explanation related to the Election Commission’s disbandment request within 7
days after receiving a copy of the EC’s request. He said his party received the
copy on Feb 14.
Mr Mitti said TRC executives would spend the 7-day period
preparing the party’s explanation to insist on its sincere intention. He
referred to the intention behind TRC’s nomination of Princess Ubolratana as its
sole prime minister candidate which prompted the EC to call for its
dissolution.
TRC spokesman Pongkasem Satayaprasert said the EC was set to
certify MP candidates on Feb 15 and TRC candidates could campaign for votes if
the EC certified them.
In response to the report that there were problems about the
qualifications of about 500 MP candidates, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu
Krea-ngam said he had earlier warned candidates to carefully prepare their
documents and review their qualifications. Some candidates might have
nationality problems and others had been sentenced to jail, he said.
Mr Wissanu did not comment on an activist’s call for the
disbandment of the Palang Pracharath Party for nominating Prime Minister Prayut
Chan-o-cha as its prime minister candidate.(TNA)
