BANGKOK, Jan 30 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plans to declare the capital the air quality control zone and will implement law to fight worsening tiny dust.
Bangkok deputy governor, Thaweesak Lertpraphan revealed the planned measure to control dust by law implementation after a meeting with senior officials from the Department of Pollution Control and the Department of Health today.
The meeting agreed to declare all Bangkok areas to be the air quality control zone under the Public Health Act B.E.2560.
When it is put into effect, the law stipulates bans on diesel-power vehicles, emitting high level of fumes and outdoor burning. Violators face a maximum three-month jail term or/and a fine of 25,000 baht.
The deputy governor pinpointed five critical locations with high concentration of the ultra-fine dust from heavy traffic and a mega construction projects.
Those areas are Tok Road in Bang Kho Laem, Phaholyothin Road in Bangkhen district, Rama2 Road in Bang Khun Thian district to Samut Sakhon, Chamchuri Square in Pathumwan district and Lat Phrao and Wang Thonglang districts.
He said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will convene a meeting with construction contractors on dust control at construction sites this week. It will also hold talks with owners of high rise buildings to discuss spray water mist from the buildings to reduce the dust particles.
It is expected the results of all dust reduction measures will be seen next week.
In a related development, Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha will issue an order under Article 44 for the Internal Security Operations Command to inspect air pollution emission from industrial plants.
Any plants found to emit harmful pollutants will be shut down. (TNA)
