BANGKOK, Jan 30 (TNA) — Thailand needs to develop its anti-corruption value as corruption remains as its major problem, said an activist organization.
The call followed Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 2018 which saw Thailand score 36 points of a total of 100 and its global rank drop from the 96th position in 2017 to the 99th in 2018.
Kulawet Jenwatanawit, secretary of the Private Sector Collective Action Coalition Against Corruption, said the CPI showed that corruption remained a great and unsolved problem of Thailand. The CPI reflected the views of stakeholders and the great extent of corruption in Thailand, he said.
According to him, solutions to corruption required cooperation from all parties as well as systematic and comprehensive measures. The conditions that lead to bribery must be reduced. The government sector must try to improve its services, cut officials’ authority to use their own judgments and make all procedures clear.
The private sector must cooperate by not paying bribes to seek conveniences or cover misconduct. The civil sector must watch out for corruption and develop an anti-corruption culture among Thai people.
Those could improve the CPI of Thailand in a steady and sustainable manner, Mr Kulawet said. (TNA)
