BANGKOK, Aug 6 (TNA) – Thailand is exploring options to sue Cambodia for civil and criminal damages over recent border violence, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Maris acknowledged the government’s plan to seek legal action against Cambodia but stated that officials are still studying which international court or organization would be the appropriate venue.
A security source said the government is collecting evidence and examining legal precedents to determine the best course of action. The source noted that the legal team is also carefully considering whether such a lawsuit would bind Thailand to the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice on other matters.
The announcement comes as Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. local time today to consolidate information from a recent meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) secretariat. The outcome of the NSC meeting is expected to guide discussions at tomorrow’s GBC meeting, where the defense ministers of both countries will hold talks. -819 (TNA)
