BANGKOK, Jan 21 (TNA) – Thailand’s Department of
Fisheries expects Thai fishery products exports will be boosted after the European Union
lifted the yellow card on Thailand for making progress in tackling illegal,
unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) earlier this month.
After having imposed the yellow card on Thailand for years,
the EU announced its decision based on significant progress made in Thailand’s
fishery industry on January 8.
The Fisheries Department’s Director-General Adisorn Promthep
said Thailand must continue to improve the fishery industry regulations and
administration, preventing overfishing and illegal fishing methods.
As a result of the move, the fishery industry would contribute
greater in driving Thailand’s economic growth, he said.
The withdrawal of yellow card of IUU benefited traditional
fishing communities and indirectly benefit related industries in the production
chain, Adisorn said.
Thailand’s international reputation had been much improved
with greater confidence in its good practices in fishery, Adisorn said.
The Department is poised to maintain the legal and
administrative standards in the fishery industry.
His agency had collected information on commercial vessels
for registration and drafting regulation to control unlicensed fishing boats,
said the Director.(TNA)
