BANGKOK, Dec 6 (TNA) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives organizes the World Soil Day 2018 event at the Golden Jubilee Museum of Agriculture Office in Pathum Thani province on Dec 5-7.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Grisada Boonrach said the International Union of Soil Sciences presented the Humanitarian Soil Scientist Award to late King Bhumibol and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared Dec 5, the birthday of the late king, the World Soil Day.
Therefore, all member states organize their soil conservation exhibitions to mark the World Soil Day in honor of the late king.
“We organize the World Soil Day 2018 fair to raise the public awareness that soil is important to human life and people should know how to use soil properly for the sake of sustainable benefits,” Mr Grisada said.
Besides, the World Soil Day Award was introduced this year and it went to the Practical Action organization of Bangladesh for its work to solve saline soil and soil erosion.
Jong-Jin Kim, FAO deputy regional representative for Asia and the Pacific, said one-third of worldwide soil deteriorated and the rest was facing severe deterioration risks due mainly to improper landfills. (TNA)
