BANGKOK, Nov 1 (TNA) — Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said he asked the management of Airports of Thailand (AOT) to find ways to further speed up the maintenance of runways and taxiways at Suvarnabhumi airport.
He said the International Air Transport Association asked Thailand to accelerate the temporary and permanent maintenance of runways and taxiways at Suvarnabhumi airport.
According to the minister, AOT plans to start the permanent maintenance in 2019. Taxiways and runways of Suvarnabhumi airport will become concrete instead of asphalt within 4-5 years. The timeframe resulted from a previous attempt to accelerate the task which would cover 700,000 square meters and cost 2.5 billion baht.
Earlier AOT reported that the task could happen only at night because Suvarnabhumi airport has not had its third runway.
Mr Arkhom said he would ask AOT if it could further shorten the maintenance period.
Regarding several delayed flights of Thai Airways International, the minister said initial investigation blamed them on technical issues but the management of the airline would have to later check if any internal conflict was involved. (TNA)
