BANGKOK, May 29 (TNA) — The government-led PromptPay payment system served 16 million transactions in April, the highest traffic ever, in relation to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to the Bank of Thailand.
Siritida Panomwon Na Ayudhya, BOT assistant governor for payment systems and financial technology, said PromptPay became the most popular money transfer channel, covering 52 million accounts and recording 11 million transactions a month on average. Shops had about 6 million QR code payment spots for PromptPay, she said.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, PromptPay served as many as 16 million transactions in April, she said.
According to Miss Siritida, there are 118 payment service providers and in the past two years BOT issued 32 licences to 17 new service providers. It is considering application from 10 more service providers.
