BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) – Thailand reports 33 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, raising the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 147.
The Covid-19 outbreak situation in Thailand remains in phase 2, said the government as it plans to cancel the Songkran holiday at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
After the meeting on handling the Covid-19 situation chaired by the prime minister today, Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krua-ngam told a press briefing that the outbreak situation in Thailand remains in Phase 2 under the country’s criteria.
He said phase 3 indicates widespread transmissions between people in the country without any links to foreigners from high risk countries. Such transmissions must affect a large number of people and occur in several areas.
Thailand is now preparing hospitals, health personnel and medication if the situation gets worse, he said.
The committee will assess the situation on the daily basis but will impose travel restrictions for travelers from risk countries. They have to travel with medicate certificates, have health insurance and they are required to install an application to allow Thai authorities to track their locations while staying in Thailand.
Moreover, the government plans to cancel the Songkran holiday from April 13-15 to prevent the spread of the outbreak as the mass exodus may increase risks of infections. The cancellation will be proposed to the Cabinet for approval tomorrow.
The government also plans to close entertainment venues, stadiums, theaters and universities temporarily.
More details will be announced and the measure could take effect on Wednesday (March 18). (TNA)
