BANGKOK, Dec 27 (TNA) — Huge crowds of people packed the Mor Chit bus terminal as authorities expect about 160,000 people will board inter-provincial buses there to head for their New Year holiday celebration in other provinces.
To cope with the heavy traffic demand, state-run Transport Co increased the trips of its own buses and those of contracted private bus operators by about 2,800 to about 8,200 trips a day.
Transport Co also introduced its well-equipped bus control center which monitors running inter-provincial buses via the global positioning system. The center can detect irregularities in bus services including violation to the bus speed limit set at 90 kilometers per hour.
The facility initially monitors 480 buses of Transport Co and its coverage will expand to about 5,000 private buses next year.
Transport Co reported that about 90,000 people left Bangkok on buses at the Mor Chit terminal yesterday and the number should reach 160,000 today after work hours end this evening. Some buses pick up passengers at the nearby Land Transport Department. (END)
