BANGKOK, Dec 20 (TNA) — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Royal Thai Police Office are campaigning for road safety during the New Year festival and the campaign focuses on raising awareness against drink driving.
Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said the BMA and the police were encouraging motorists not to drive under the influence in order to reduce traffic accidents nationwide during the New Year festival.
The World Health Organization reported that the number of traffic accidents in Thailand was the fifth highest globally as more than 20,000 people died in road accidents in the country yearly, or three people an hour.
In the past New Year festival there were about 3,900 traffic accidents that resulted mainly from drink driving. The accidents caused economic damage worth about 500 billion baht.
Pol Gen Aswin said that the BMA had measures to promote road safety during the New Year festival and they concerned reduction in traffic accident risks related to roads, vehicles, waterways and tourists.
The BMA also sets up its New Year road safety center, has its action plan to integrate road safety efforts of organizations, forms a working group to analyze the causes of traffic accidents, and plans to praise the district offices that efficiently campaign for road safety. (TNA)
