BANGKOK, Dec 13 (TNA) — The centuries-old Royal Barge Procession on the Chao Phraya River on Thursday marks the completion of the coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
Over 2,200 oarsmen in ancient warrior attires rowed 52 barges, some of which are nearly 200 years old, down the river in the royal ceremony handed down for generations.
Starting from the Wasukri Pier, the auspicious ceremony concludes the royal coronation by which taking the King to a merit-making ceremony called Kathin.
Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida travelled on the Suphannahong, the royal barge made of teak wood painted in gold lacquer and glass-jewel decorations.
Members of the Royal Family were seated on other barges; the Anantanakkharat, the Anekkachatphuchong and the Narai Song Suban.
The oarsmen made synchronized rowing with chanting of special verses composed for the royalty relayed through speakers along the route.
Huge crowds of over 100,000, mostly clad in yellow, watched the procession from many piers and locations including Thammasat University, Rama VIII Bridge and Siriraj Hospital.
The Royal Thai Navy who is responsible for the procession invites the public to visit the Royal Barge Museum where the vessels are preserved after the ceremony. (TNA)
