BANGKOK, Nov 19 (TNA) – The Marine Department and
Bangchak Corporation on Tuesday jointly conducted an oil-spill drill on the
Chao Phraya River, simulating an emergency response by deploying a skimming
vessel built by a Thai oil company.
Bangchak-owned Sri Thararak 8 vessel was deployed in the exercise
to demonstrate its capability and ensure safety and effective response to
oil-spill.
The Marine Department Director-general Withaya Yamuang said
the drill was aimed to display the preparedness for safety and environment
protection for communities along the Chao Phraya River.
Sri Thararak 8 is equipped with side collecting boom and
skimmer belt to recover oil from the surface of the water, according to
Bangchak.
Chaiwat Kovavisarach,
Bangchak’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said instead of deploying
three vessels Sri Thararak 8 was solely capable of marine oil-spill operation
to remove 10,000 liters of oil.
Its oil skimmer mechanically separates oil floating on the
surface of water and collects it.
To increase the safety, the vessel was also equipped with
firefighting equipment, Chaiwat said. (TNA)
