PHANG NGA, Nov 18 (TNA) – A big leatherback turtle was spotted lay eggs on a beach in the Andaman coastal province of Phang Nga for the second consecutive year.
Villagers spotted the mother turtle filling the hole with sand on a beach near Pak Nam Khao in Tai Muang district and alerted officials.
Marine park officials inspected the site and found 104 eggs. As the hole there could be flooded by the sea water, they moved the eggs to a beach in the Khao Lam Pee – Hat Tai Muang national park, four kilometres away, said Tai Muang district chief, Prapas Khunpitak.
It takes about 45-60 days for the eggs to hatch. It is delightful to see the leatherback turtle return for the second year in a row, the district chief said.
It was earlier seen laying eggs on Kuek Kak beach and Tai Muang beach after there had been no reports of leatherback sea turtles laying eggs on Phang Nga beaches over the past ten years. (TNA)
