PHANG NGA, Dec 17 (TNA) – A big leatherback turtle laid eggs on a beach in Phang Nga’s Khao Lak area after only a few have been seen there since the tsunami in 2004.
The mother turtle is about 125 cm. long and 70 cm. wide and weighs about 130-150 kg. It was seen, laying eggs on Khuk Khak beach and heading back to the sea this morning.
Officials from relevant agencies are taking care of the eggs.
Director of the local Department of Marine and Coastal Resources office, Prathom Ratsamee, said the restoration of nature made the leatherback turtle return to Khao Lak.
It is endangered species with a risk of extinction in the wild. Fishing activities and any disturbance on the beaches have affected the turtles and they disappeared, he said. (TNA)
