NONTHABURI, Oct 30 (TNA) — The Commerce Ministry convened concerned operators to discuss the United States’ suspension of its Generalized System of Preferences for Thailand to have a clear picture of impacts.
Deputy Prime Minister/Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said he ordered the Thai Office of Commercial Affairs together with the Thai labour attaché in Washington DC to meet the US Trade Representative on Nov 1 to discuss the suspended GSP concerning 573 Thai export items. Therefore, he ordered the permanent secretary for commerce to discuss impacts and possible solutions with concerned operators.
He said the Commerce Ministry would intensify marketing campaigns in China, India, Turkey, Germany, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Middle East, South Africa, England and Europe. Commercial attachés would lead affected operators to the markets for campaigns, he said.
Mr Jurin also said that the suspended GSP issue had nothing to do with the US’s demand for Thailand to allow alien workers to form their labour unions and to import pork from pigs raised with meat-increasing feed additives. (TNA)
