BANGKOK, Oct 25 (TNA) — Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD) is seriously fighting against particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5).
TBCSD and the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) organized a discussion on the cause of PM2.5 and solutions as the air pollution in Thailand is expected to seasonally worsen from December to March.
Air pollution specialist Dr Supat Wangwongwatana said PM2.5 resulted from the combustion of diesel engines and the outdoor burning of biomass and its levels would rise when air was stagnant.
He recommended the use of diesel with up to 10ppm of sulfur instead of that with 50ppm of sulfur. He said the measure could reduce the emission of PM2.5 by 15-20%. He also recommended natural gas in pace of diesel fuel.
Besides, he demanded the private sector stop using vehicles with black smoke and the government seriously enforce the Euro 6 emission standard and limit the time when big trucks enter urban areas.
TEI president Dr Wijarn Simachaya said his institute would urge the private sector to maintain the engines of their vehicles regularly, develop the road safety mindset of drivers, use bio-based fuel or natural gas when PM2.5 levels were unsafe, and campaign against the use of diesel vehicles in inner Bangkok.
TEI would also educate general people on PM2.5, he said. (TNA)
