BANGKOK, Oct 9 (TNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon will preside over a meeting on haze pollution in the northern province of Chiang Mai tomorrow.
The meeting to be held by the Pollution Control Department aims to handle smoke haze, which affects people’s health and tourism in the northern provinces every year.
Governors of nine northern provinces, senior ministerial officials will attend the meeting at the Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre to take a comprehensive approach and find preventive measures against fine particulate matter pollution next year.
The government sector will create network with local people to stop open burning and support officials’ operations to tackle forest fires.
Gen Prawit will also meet personnel and volunteers, who are the driving force in fire-fighting operation and forest fire surveillance to give them moral support.
A smoke crisis generally hit northern provinces in early February and could prolong for several months in the dry season.
Chiang Mai town’s geography is surrounded by mountains and resembles the shape of bowl, which partly causes tiny particulate matter to get trapped close to the ground and aggravates the air pollution problem in the city. (TNA)
