GENEVA, Oct 4 (TNA) — The director-general of the Intellectual Property Department signed an agreement on academic cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to support the innovation-based economic development of the country.
Thosapone Dunsuputra, director-general of the department, signed the agreement during his attendance at the WIPO General Assembly. He met WIPO director-general Francis Gurry and signed the cooperation agreement.
Under the agreement, WIPO will support the Intellectual Property Department in improving the management, examination and registration of intellectual property. Besides, it will support cooperation between the government and the private sector on the commercial development of intellectual property to facilitate the government’s policy to promote innovation-based economic development.
Mr Thosapone said that Thailand was the first country that WIPO chose to seal the academic cooperation agreement which would also improve the protection and use of intellectual property and support infrastructural development in Thailand.
At the WIPO General Assembly, Mr Thosapone presented intellectual property protection in Thailand including the protection of genetic resources, local wisdom and traditional cultures. Also, he called on member states to enter into the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled. Thailand became a party to the treaty on April 28. (TNA)
