NAYPYIDAW, Oct 4 (TNA) — Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has vowed to push for the development of the Dawei port project and related projects for mutual benefits in the region.
After attending the 9th meeting of the Thailand-Myanmar Joint Coordinating Committee, Mr Saksayam said the meeting discussed the progress of Dawei special economic zone development and ways to boost cooperation of Thailand, Myanmar and Japan to support the development.
The Thai government was determined to push for the Dawei deep-sea port project because it concerned Thailand’s 20-year national strategic plan, the transport minister said.
The Dawei deep-sea port would compete a logistic shortcut from Vietnam to Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar and reduce time and costs for trade between the East and the West, he said.
Besides, relevant development projects near the new port site would lead to economic development and the employment of about 900,000 people in an industrial estate in Dawei and increase the gross domestic product of Myanmar by 4.8% and that of Thailand by 1.9% yearly, Mr Saksayam said.
Thailand already offered a soft loan for Myanmar to build a new road from Kanchanaburi province to Dawei and mid next year Thai and Myanmar governments would hold a meeting to push for the Dawei development, he said. (TNA)
