TAK, May 28 (TNA) – Intense fighting along the Thai-Myanmar border on Wednesday morning led to 290 people seeking refuge in Thailand, as heavy weapons fire disrupted border communities.
Clashes erupted near Thailand’s Phop Phra district after Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Force (PDF) fighters attacked Myanmar soldiers near the Ban Chibabo base. An hour-long exchange of heavy gunfire, less than a kilometer from the Thai border, prompted residents of nearby Mawker Thai village to prepare for bunkers.
School attendance in Mawker Thai was low as parents prioritized safety. Thai security forces are present to ensure teacher safety.
The Tak Provincial Thai-Myanmar Border Command Centre reported 290 displaced Myanmar nationals are now in three temporary safe zones at two temples and a church. Security officials are providing humanitarian assistance. – 819 (TNA)
