UBON RATCHATHANI, Sept 28 (TNA) – Four provinces remain under water while 12 schools in Ubon Ratchathani are still closed due to severe floods, resulted from tropical storm and depression late last month, said Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.
Many areas in northeastern Thailand were submerged by floods since August 29 because of tropical storm Kajiki and tropical depression Podul while southwestern storm covering the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand was strong.
Volunteers, related officials and the private sector are now busy cleaning places which used to be inundated so that life could return to normal.
More than 150 schools in Ubon Ratchathani were affected by flood in the beginning. However, classes at 12 schools are still closed for an indefinite period and some schools are expected to be closed until mid-October.
According to Mr. Chayapol, the storms had affected 32 provinces and drowned 35 people. Some 5,000 houses were damaged and four northeastern provinces were hard hit by floods. (TNA)
