NAN, Sept 24 (TNA) – Local residents in the northern province of Nan celebrate unique Thai culture of rhinoceros beetle fighting in an annual
festival.

opening of the World of Rhino Beetles Festival on Monday.
Held during the beetle mating season, the Festival running
until September 28 displays beetle-related culture and other local agrarian
customs.
Rhino beetle fighting is a common site in northern
Thailand. Groups of men, young and old,
take their raised or captured beetles to fight with others’.
In the wild, male beetles fight each other over female. They use their horns, which vary in number
from two to five, to lift and push their opponents. Their presence indicates fertility of the
land and jungle.
In the fighting arena, usually on log, the victorious beetle
is the one that forces its opponent’s to flee.(TNA)
