BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) – Thammasat University will host
its second campaign to remove garbage from the Chao Phraya River next month.
In cooperation with several agencies and a row boat club,
last year’s campaign saw over two tons of trash collected from the scenic river.
Professor Prinya Thaewanarumitkul, vice rector for student
affairs of Thammasat University, on Friday announced the second year’s campaign
“Kayaking for Chao Phraya” from October 1-10.
Volunteers on kayaks and row boats would travel nearly 350
kilometers along the River from Nakhon Sawan to the river mouth in Samut
Prakan, he said. In addition, about 100
boats would take part in the sections in upstream provinces.
After garbage collection, about 400 volunteers would train
local people how to sort and dispose garbage, he said.
The University wished to emulate the success of last year’s
campaign which helped remove garbage before entering the ocean, he said.
The river cleaning activity will take place two weeks before
the royal barge procession on October 24 which is a part of His Majesty King
Maha Vajiralongkorn’s coronation.(TNA)
