BANGKOK, Aug 29 (TNA) – Thai police’s special task force has
announced its success in suppressing illegal ivory trade, seizing over 9.9 tons
of ivory in the past six years.
Deputy national police chief Pol General Chalermkiat
Srivorakan said in a press conference on Thursday that the anti-illegal ivory
trade operation center would be closed on September 30 after achieving the
great success.
He referred to the decision by the CITES (Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species) to remove Thailand from the list of countries
affected by ivory trafficking on August 21.
Although, Thailand was dropped from the CITES list police
would continue efforts to suppress and bring an end to the illegal ivory trade,
he said.
“The success story comes from strict law enforcement and new
effective laws,” said Pol General Chalermkiat.
In a report to be forwarded to CITES, the center had
compiled the illegal ivory cases in which over 2,000 items weighing 9.9 tons
and worth Bt990 million were confiscated since its establishment in 2014, he
