BANGKOK, Aug 27 (TNA) — The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) expressed condolences on the death of an insurgent suspect and asked the government to establish measures to protect suspects from being tortured.
NHRC Sopon Jingjit expressed the condolences on the death of insurgent suspect Abdulloh Esormuser who was arrested in the evening of July 20 and detained at the Ingkayutthaboriharn military camp in Nong Chik district of Pattani province. He was found unconscious at the camp on the following day, then sent to hospitals and pronounced dead yesterday (Aug 25).
Mr Sopon said he shared the sorrow with the family and friend of Abdulloh and the NHRC would quickly probe the issue as requested by the family.
“The Region 4 Forward Command of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) formed a committee to investigate why Abdulloh had been unconscious but the probe has not come to a conclusion,” Mr Sopon said.
The NHRC earlier proposed the government and the Justice Ministry develop mechanisms to protect people from being tortured or punished inhumanely, he said.
Mr Sopon also said that the ISOC’s Region 4 Forward Command should have regulations to ensure the detention of suspects would be transparent and ill detainees would be treated quickly. Surveillance cameras could help ensure the transparency, he said. (TNA)
