TAK, Nov 25 (TNA) – Thai authorities have rescued 39 foreign nationals, mostly Sri Lankans, who were lured into working in a Chinese-run call center scam operation in Myanmar.
A joint operation involving Thai military, police, and immigration officials led to the discovery of the victims on Monday morning near the Thai-Myanmar border. The victims, who had crossed the Moei River into Thailand’s Tak province, expressed immense relief upon being rescued.
According to initial investigations, the victims were recruited by human traffickers who promised them lucrative jobs in Myanmar. However, upon arrival, they were forced to work long hours in a call center operated by a Chinese criminal syndicate.
The call center is located in the Tai Chang project area in Myawaddy across the border from Thailand’s Phop Phra district. The area has been identified as a major hub for cybercrime activities.
Thai authorities have been working closely with the Sri Lankan embassy and other relevant agencies to coordinate the rescue operation and provide assistance to the victims. The rescued individuals are now being processed by immigration officials and will be provided with necessary support and protection. – 819 (TNA)
